What is the impact you want to have in the world?
It is a question everybody has to ask themselves in order to find purpose in their lives. My whole life I have been looking to find an answer to that question: a quest that led me deep into the philosophy from the Greeks to Nietzsche; it made me study biochemistry and genetics to understand the essence of life; it guided my during my PhD in Neuroscience and cellular communication. And finally, I found an answer to all those loose ends in a framework that brought together research, philosophy, humanism and applied science: Biomimicry, the method and model how to learn from nature to make the human impact on this planet positive and productive instead of destructive and harmful.
I started off in 2014 as Assistant Project Manager with Biomimicry Germany, the nonprofit organisation that brought Biomimicry to Germany from the US. I learnt my Biomimicry essentials from my two mentors there, Dr. Arndt Pechstein and Dr. Prateep Beed, my good friends whom I am dearly thankful to. They taught and guided me, and the tasks I could take on helped me find my role as an organiser, community coordinator and strategic developer. In 2016, I became a member of the board of directors beside the two and we advanced the public education programme of the NPO massively. All these developments cummulated now in the creation of the Biomimicry Academy and I am so proud to have the honour and lead it as its director. The training programme combines the best of the Biomimicry framework with what we learnt about its application in business throughout the years: Human-Centred Design, Circular Economy, Problem-based Learning, Business Modelling and Communication. Our activities around the programme have had such a positive impact on the community and the business network already, although the first cohort of Biomimicry Practitioners will only start their education in July 2019! It amazes me to think what we will develop together with the participants along with the European and global network in the future, near and far.
Biomimicry for me is comprised of a process and a value set that serve a massive goal: To make our human world as holistically sustainable as nature itself. Humans are as much a part of nature as everything around us. To accept that is to use the tool that enables us to integrate into the environment, to serve it and create the conditions under which all life can flourish. This is true sustainability and includes resilience and regeneration, those principles which are essential to all life forms. We as the human civilization can not survive without them, we are not independent of the conditions we live in. This is why we have to take care of this planet, its ecosystems and life forms: To preserve, serve and learn from them to make our solutions future-proof. We have a long way to go and change a big part of our personal and economical behaviours. But to use nature as mentor and model, and Biomimicry as method and measure, is a major step into the right direction.
If you are interested in the program or you want to apply for the “Bioinspired Circular Innovation” training than go to.
